List of all competitive exams for school students (Class 8, 9 and 10)

A curious mind needs to be ready for the competitive world right from the beginning. There are some very good competitive exams for school students that are conducted at the national level for school children. The tests can be taken by students of classes II to XII depending upon the eligibility criteria for these exams. These exams are conducted to recognize and reward exceptionally brilliant student in different fields of education. These exams are specific to class 8, 9 and 10.
  1. National Talent Search Examination or NTSE is a scholarship program conducted for class X students at the national level to recognize and honor talented students. The students who qualify the two-tier exam receive cash scholarship for the complete academic year. (official website)
  1. National Level Science Talent Search Exam or NLSTSE is conducted by Unified Council to identify talented students from classes II to XII. Unlike regular tests which try only to find out how much a child knows (or has memorized), NSTSE measures how well a student has understood concepts and gives detailed feedback on the same, to help them improve. (official website)
  1. Olympiads are the annual competitive test conducted for Classes IX to XII to acknowledge talent in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Junior Science and Astronomy. The National Standard Exam (NSE) in Junior Sciences is conducted for classes X (or lower). The Indian Association of Physics Teachers conducts NSE in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy.   1. Science Olympiad Foundation conducts competitive exam at the school level for students of classes I to XII. The foundation conducts separate exams for subjects like Computer (National Cyber Olympiad), Maths (International Maths Olympiad), Science (National Science Olympiad) and English (International English Olympiad).   1. GeoGenius is a Geography Olympiad conducted on national level for classes II to XII. However it does not provide entry to the International Geography Olympiad which is conducted separately. (official website)
  1. Kishore Vigyan Protsahan Yojana or KVPY: It is a national level competitive exam for school children conducted by the Department of Science and Technology for students of classed XI and XII. The selected students become eligible for admission to the five year integrated MS program at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research.   1. National Interactive Maths Olympiad or NIMO is a national level exam for students of classes V to XII to test their mathematical skills and mental ability. The exam is conducted by Eduheal foundation. (official website)
  1. National Biotechnology Olympiad or NBO comprises of 50 questions for 50 marks and is also conducted by Eduheal Foundation for students of classes V to XII. (official website)
School tests, including board exams, tend to be superficial, testing what children have memorised. But the important skills like the ability to think independently and reason logically which is so critical in today’s world are often not emphasised in school tests. Such competitive exams at school level have interesting questions that require thinking, not simply recall. These competitive exams provide detailed skill-wise feedback highlighting strengths and weaknesses and provide a benchmark of the student’s performance with peers all over the country.
